The times when the words flow effortlessly out of your mind, through your fingers, into the keyboard and onto the screen are some of the most incredible in your writing life. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen often. Most of the time it’s straight hard slog.
But there are actions we can take so as not to sabotage our efforts.

Because there are a whole heap of ways to plot a book–and not everything works for everybody–it’s helpful if we know what’s out there so we can make good choices.
Dan Wells is a horror writer, but I’m not going to hold that against him! The guy has an excellent five-part series of YouTube videos on Story Structure. Below is the link to Part One.

Now, a warning. You’ll need to take notes–not because he’s complicated but because it’s really interesting. I’ve used his Story Structure method to plot my new YA book and, in my opinion, it’s well worth trying.

Good question!
I’ve added a “Books” page here and (once I’ve figured out how to add sub pages) I’ll add a couple more extracts of my books.
The book loaded–Cast A Long Shadow–is a romantic suspense and the first in a six book series.
Check back in a couple of weeks for the first chapter or so of the first book in my new YA series.
Please do comment on the work. I’d love to know what you think.

A few of you have emailed and asked me about RWNZ’s monthly magazine, Heart To Heart, because you’ve had trouble downloading the sample from the RWNZ site.
Yes, it’s a huge file there. So while we’re waiting for them to put up the compressed file I’ve sent them here’s another link to the much smaller–and, I hope–more reader-friendly pdf. It’s exactly the same as the one on the site. Just about 4 MB smaller. This one’s around 2.8MB.
Let me know if you continue to have a problem.
Oh, and you can get this mag every month if you decide to join RWNZ. We have members all over the world.

So. What is a creative box?
A creative box is a container of some sort in which you keep items intended to stimulate your creativity. It doesn’t have to be a box. It can be a jar, or a computer file, or a scrapbook. There’s nothing magic about the “box” part. The magical part can be found in the content.
What’s the content? It’s anything–and I do mean any thing–that stimulates your imagination. Here are a few of the items in my Creative Box. Read the rest of this entry »
